Summerville upsets Colfax, reaches semifinals

COLFAX Raise your hand if you thought the Summerville High School boys' basketball team could win a second-round playoff game with leading scorer Joe Sanders fouling out after scoring just eight points and the Bears' second-leading scorer on the night going for 11 points.

As improbable as it sounds, that's exactly what happened Friday when the No. 6-seeded Bears went into No. 3 Colfax's hostile gymnasium and emerged with a 61-56 victory over the Falcons in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV second-round playoff game.

"That's probably the biggest away victory in the playoffs that I've been associated with, considering the quality of the opponent, the noise level at the gym, and the three or four hours it took us to get there" Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said.

How it happened is no mystery; two words sum it up Quint Gerber.

Summerville's senior point guard put the Bears (22-7) on his back and carried them into the section semifinals for the first time since 1997 by scoring a game-high 26 points, including 14 in the pivotal third quarter.

During his third quarter blitz, Gerber, a two-time all-Mother Lode League guard, knocked down four straight 3-pointers the last one from 26 feet and led the Bears from a 3-point deficit to a 10-point lead.

"I was just in the zone," Gerber said. "We were all feeling it and the crowd was really into it."

"That was probably the best shooting quarter I've ever seen a guy have," Ronten added.
