Summerville edged by Orestimba, 66-60

NEWMAN A tough call at crunch time and poor free-throw shooting throughout proved costly to the Summerville High School girls' basketball team, which lost a 66-60 squeaker to Orestimba last night in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.

The 12th-seeded Bears (12-10) led 60-58 with two minutes left when Megan Wingo drove to the the hoop and scored. Hold everything. Wingo was called for a charging foul, which not only took away Summerville's four-point lead, but fouled out one of its top players.

No. 5 Orestimba (19-7) tied the game on its next possession on a bucket by Keri Kirby, and then took the lead after Summerville missed when center Kelli Pon scored the last of her 30 points.

Summerville's chances ended on its next possession when Kellie Pierce, who scored a team-high 23 points, was sent to the bench with her fifth foul.

"The foul situation hurt us," said Summerville coach Darcy Wingo, who also lost starting center Leena Vantrece to fouls late in the game. "But it was an exciting game, back-and-forth, and our girls played hard."

It was strange that the Bears were let down by their foul shooting, because that had been a strength all season. They set a school record, in fact, by making 65 percent of their free throws in Mother Lode League play, but against Orestimba they were just 9-for-23 (39 percent).

Orestimba, the Southern League runner-up, was 17-for-29 (59 percent) from the stripe.

Pierce made four of Summerville's seven 3-pointers on the way to matching her jersey number in the point column in her final game. Melissa Wise hit two treys, and Kelsey Wingo (10 points) knocked down one triple. Megan Wingo scored 15 points.

Kirby backed Pon with 16 for Orestimba, which advances to a second-round game tomorrow night in Angels Camp against No. 4 Bret Harte, the MLL champion.

Summerville has lost two straight first-round thrillers to No. 5 seeds. Last year, the Bears took Loretto of Sacramento into overtime before falling 62-54.
