HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS BEGIN TONIGHT

The Sac-Joaquin Section basketball playoffs begin tonight, with the Sonora and Summerville high school girls' teams in action.

Sonora (15-9) travels to play Center (16-10) in Elverta, north of Sacramento, in a Division III first-round game, while Summerville (12-9) goes across the valley to play Orestimba of Newman (18-7) in Division IV. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Sonora is seeded No. 11, Center No. 6, Summerville No. 12, and Orestimba No. 5 in the 16-team brackets.

The winners play Thursday night at 7 in the second round, Sonora or Center against No. 3 El Camino of Sacramento (23-4) or No. 14 Ponderosa of Shingle Springs (12-13), Summerville or Orestimba against No. 4 Bret Harte (18-10) or No. 13 Hughson (10-13).

The Division III semifinals are next Tuesday at Galt High, and the championship game is Friday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m. at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The Division IV semis are Wednesday, March 5, at Tokay High in Lodi, and the finals are Saturday, March 8, at noon at Arco.

The boys' playoffs begin tomorrow night at 7, with No. 16 Sonora (12-13) visiting No. 1 Foothill of Sacramento (25-2) in Division III, and No. 6 Summerville (20-7) hosting No. 11 Mariposa (13-15) in Division IV at the Summerville gym in Tuolumne.

Second-round games are Friday, and the semifinals and finals are on the same dates in the in the same places as those in the D-III and D-IV girls' playoffs.

The Sonora-Foothill winner will play either No. 8 Union Mine of El Dorado (17-8) or No. 8 Center (16-8) in the second round, while the Summerville-Mariposa winner will play either No. 3 Colfax (20-7) or No. 14 Patterson (11-15).
