Bret Harte girls win back MLL title

SAN ANDREAS Bret Harte High School reclaimed the Mother Lode League girls' basketball championship last night with a resounding 65-45 victory over archrival Calaveras.

The Bullfrogs (18-10, 9-1) jumped to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter and were in control all the way against the Redskins (17-9, 7-3) in a game that bore no resemblance to the 45-43 overtime thriller Bret Harte took from Calaveras on Feb. 5 in Angels Camp.

Senior forward Tawnie Lee scored 20 points, junior guard Megan Shires 12, and sophomore guard Kathleen Avrit 12 as Bret Harte took back the title from Calaveras, which last year stopped the Bullfrogs' streak of 10 straight crowns.

The key to the game, in the view of Bret Harte coach Mike Lewis, was the defense of Amber Slankard and Alyssa Cheney against Calaveras post players Shelby Golston and Kaitlyn Lavaroni.

Lavaroni scored 15 points, but Golston was held to two after scoring 16 the last time the teams played.

"Slankard and Cheney played great defense against them," Lewis said. "They made them come out high to catch the ball most of the time, and the pressure of our guards made them come out even higher to help a lot of the time.

"When Lavaroni got it down on the block, we were in trouble. But she had to come out high most of the time."

Christine Wilson scored 14 points for Calaveras, but eight including both her 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter with the issue decided.

Now the Bullfrogs prepare for a first-round home game Tuesday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs. They're No. 4 in the power ratings, meaning they'll get another home game if they make it to the second round.

Their first-round opponent will be determined this weekend.
