Historic church almost torched

To the Editor:

Lacey Peterson's feature article on June 13, "Centennial celebration for Standard Church," was very informative, but there is another dimension to this story that is worthwhile mentioning. It's hard to believe now, but prior to the renovation of this landmark in the mid-1990s, it came within a few days of being burned to the ground in a training exercise by local firefighting agencies.

Yes, after 80 years this old building was in a deteriorated condition, but destroying it was not an appropriate solution. Fortunately, the cremation was not carried out and the building lives on, restored, reborn, reused and an important part of downtown Standard.

As someone who has advocated for the careful stewardship of our heritage buildings for 36 years, the Standard Community Church is indeed a success story.
