Don't waste your vote this election

To the Editor:

Before Abraham Lincoln was elected president, my great-great-grandmother, an Irish lass, residing in Tuolumne, was married in Tuolumne County in 1857. I am proud of this heritage; it gives me great pleasure to walk in her footsteps, volunteer, and serve the community.

A year ago this month, I had the unpleasant experience of a truck running over my foot! I resigned as a director of the Tuolumne Utilities District because I could not fully fulfill my duties and responsibilities.

Some know that I took out papers for election as a Sonora City Council. However, I have a conflict of interest as a "Real Party in Interest" in the "Tuolumne Jobs and Business Alliance vs. City of Sonora, Walmart, and James Grinnell" lawsuit, now before the California Supreme Court. Why? I circulated a petition for local City of Sonora voters to make the "yea or nay" decision about the store expansion. I truly believe if the election had been held, and if passed, shoppers would now have additional shopping choices, and the city and the county would have much needed sales tax revenues.

There are three candidates I support: Randy Hanvelt for Supervisor, Kaenan Whitman for Assessor-Recorder, and Matt Hawkins for Sonora City Council.

Randy represents many years of experience with General Electric. He is a hard worker on our behalf.

Kaenan and Matt are young with fresh ideas, plus the energy, drive, and willingness to listen. They are young fathers interested in the community.

Matt Hawkins is currently mayor pro-tem, and was on the Sonora Elementary School Board. His wife works at Black Oak Casino's hotel.

Kaenan Whitman is a state certified appraiser. His wife runs their "Runway Xchange" clothing store on Washington Street.

These are important times. Please don't waste your vote.

Jim Grinnell
