New water bill is purely political

To the Editor:

HR 3964, Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Emergency, Water Delivery Act is not about smart water use, conservation, laws, or established policies. This bill is purely about politics and political payback to a small segment of California farmers from a few indebted tea party republicans.

I thought that these tea party folks were strong supporters of "states rights." Well, every Constitutional Officer in California from the Governor on down is opposed to this legislation. Both our Senators are opposed to this bill. The huge majority of Californians who know this bill oppose it. So much for states rights.

Informed Californians oppose HR3964 - after all who in their right mind wants to see precious and scarce water used to grow cotton in a desert? (Fact - It can take 5,283 gallons of water to produce 1kg of cotton = one T-shirt and a pair of jeans.)

I thought tea party politicians were all about, "free market ideology." Well where does billions in taxpayer subsidies fit into their ideology? What happened to all this talk about government staying out of the private sector markets? What happened to "no more bailouts? Get it folks - so much for free market forces unencumbered by government interference. It's about hypocrisy.

On a local level - last year I asked Peter Kampa to impose conservation measures on TUD water. He felt it would not wash with the Board.

A few weeks back I wrote several letters to Tom Scesa and continued my suggestion with renewed intensity - throwing in a suggestion to withdraw all building/development approval until we know what our drought status becomes. TUD has thousands of units that developers feel they are entitled to water should they build. I commend Mr. Scesa on his decision (however late) to impose mandatory conservation.

Now how about that building moratorium?
