Building smarter houses will save more water

To the Editor:

Calling all architects and contractors.

Please design houses to conserve water.

Sadly, most California houses are built to waste water.

Following are several ideas that could be incorporated in future building plans to conserve water:

If plumbing was modified so that shower and bath water could - at the users discretion - be reused in the wash cycle for the laundry; adding fresh water for the rinse cycle and recycling that reused soapy water to flush the toilets, water consumption could be reduced 50 to 70 percent.

Further all outside rain-gutter water, as well as any clear kitchen waste water could be stored in outside barrels to supplement water for the garden during dry spells. Kitchen disposals would have to drain out with the bathroom black water, or be added to garden waste for composting.

Point of use faucet water heaters should be used for any faucets too far from the water heater to be effective.

Most older houses could incorporate some of these ideas, but for any new residential building proposals these more strict guidelines would help all of us

in the future.

May we all implement Solomon's prayers printed in Second Chronicles 6:26.
