Call for campaign finance reform

To the Editor:

There seems to be an intense and organized effort in our country to steal our government from the people for whom that government exists. Two of these efforts are the movements to suppress voting rights by many state governments. The second and more egregious one is the manner in which our political campaigns are financed. The U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing unions, corporations and associations to spend unlimited amounts in elections is an incredible affront to a freely elected, unbiased government. This cannot happen if big money, no matter where it comes from, is allowed to inevitably influence the politicos to whom they donation their funds. We must now have campaign finance reform.

Let the free market run its course

To the Editor:

I read Klaus Kraemer's letter of Jan. 21 and for the first time I must agree with him.

He stated "Capitalism is not the blame. The blame lies with the influence of money that corrupts the political process." He is right. But he offers no solution.

I have one.

Simply allow capitalism or the free market to exist without government control, regulations or influence.

Corporations, then, could not influence politicians to regulate their competition out of business. Government favoritism would not exist. The market would be free and clean. Business would prosper or fail due to honest competition, not over regulation.

Government would simply protect individual rights, contractual agreements and defend us from crime. Acme Widgets Inc. could not bribe a politician to legislate or regulate in their favor because the politician would have not authority to do such a thing.

All the evils, abuses, and iniquities, popularly ascribed to business and to capitalism, were not caused by an unregulated economy or by a free market, but by government intervention into the economy.
