Attacking ACA doesn't help GOP

To the Editor:

It's increasingly obvious that extreme right wing Republicans hammering the president and his Affordable Care Act continue to be desperate for issues that they think can discredit him and it.

In the process, they clearly demonstrate their ignorance - not only on this subject, but on our country's critical need to significantly improve our current healthcare efforts and to deal effectively with this extremely vital matter.

If they look into then-Gov. Romney's start with the Massachusetts system, they'll find the process took three months just to begin functioning. After the population became more familiar with the system, people grew so pleased with it that other states began to see it as a model for their own, and ultimately it led to the Affordable Healthcare Act as well.

Apparently many Americans are unaware that the United States is the only developed nation without a government-led healthcare system other than Medicare. In fact, we are continuously ranked near or at the very bottom in quality of healthcare by international health organizations. Probably the most telling and significant measure on this scale is reflected in a recent study by our own Johns Hopkins University that reveals Americans pay 50 percent to 60 percent more for healthcare than all other developed countries, and we get less for it.

Surely figures such as these should generate reconsideration - not obstruction - for understanding why we are in this situation and why President Obama has worked so vigorously to establish the Affordable Healthcare Act as an essential component of true democracy.
