Clarifying quotes

To the Editor:

Malcolm Carden (Nov. 14) - I appreciated this response to my letter of Nov. 11. I was misled by normally reliable web sources and should have researched the included quotes more fully myself.

Cicero actually stated "The arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome fall." which was 'enhanced' years ago to reflect a current perspective. Granted - a good plan - don't believe, or pass on, all you read, especially quotes. With that said, the enhancements nonetheless ring true but perhaps not for Cicero.

In fact, all the statements (without attribution) come together to support small government, lower taxes and a balanced budget. Someone made those statements - had that level of insight. The views are worth consideration, regardless of the source.

By the way, there is a cartoon out there … starts with someone saying: "It's time to go to bed;"; a person on a computer replies "I can't, this is important"; the other person responds: "What?"; the computer person replies: "Someone is wrong on the Internet!"

Occasionally, this happens in the newspaper as well and I've often wondered if I'd ever run into that computer person (Duty calls, stand back - I'll take care of this). The cool thing is: Mr. Carden probably spent several hours researching quote attributions "for me" - time that he'll never get back.

Thanks.

Anyway, I did get the Obama quote right. Hopefully, those that read my original letter didn't feel the need to take the time to determine if that quote was correctly stated and attributed, especially anyone that has had their health insurance cancelled.

Finally, a ticking time bomb: a second wave of 50 to 100 million insurance policy cancellations coming next fall.
