New Sonora High pool is necessary

To the Editor:

We have lived in Tuolumne County for the past 29 years and for more than 10 years, our children have attended Sonora High School. When we voted for the recent school bond measure, we understood that the funds would be used to upgrade the facilities at the school, which included classrooms, track and the pool. We do not feel that we have been misled.

Our water polo teams need to use the pool at Sonora Sports and Fitness center for their meets because the pool at Sonora High does not meet the necessary requirements. Even with the disadvantage of not having an adequate pool to practice in, the boys' varsity water polo team recently won their second VOL title and also won back-to-back playoff wins. This sport has grown into an incredible asset for our students and school.

The pool also provides all students the opportunity to have swimming part of their physical educational curriculum. The swim team utilizes the pool during the spring months however they also struggle with the substandard qualities of our current pool during practices and swim meets.

In addition, the pool provides our community with much needed summer employment, for our high school students and young adults. With the many rivers, streams and lakes in our county it is imperative for us to have affordable swimming lessons with competent instructors in order to prevent needless drowning deaths.

There are so many reasons why the old pool does not meet the needs of Sonora High school and our community. It has deteriorated in the past 60 years and the only option is to replace it with a pool that will last for generations to come. We are grateful that the school board has put this improvement on their priority list.
