Support school mergers

To the Editor:

The people of California by passing Proposition 30 gave Tuolumne County schools a life-saving boost. Their foresight and votes most likely saved Tuolumne County from having to take draconian action such as closing more schools - perhaps Summerville High School.

Our local schools are on a virtual fiscal flat line. In just twelve years Sonora High School's attendance has dropped by 34 percent. Similar declines run throughout the system.

Our schools have had a good graduation record. However, we do not have as good a record on preparing our children for college and for the 21st Century labor market.

Fewer students, less money, crowded and outdated classrooms, and lack of choices of available classes, is a recipe for disaster. However, in one area, the Tuolumne County's educational system is flourishing, that would be our bureaucratic juggernaut. We have so many districts, superintendents, and school boards that are wasting millions of dollars that we can put back into the classrooms to properly educate our children.

Six months ago, a group of your neighbors formed a committee, the Tuolumne County Committee for Unification of Resources for Education (TuCCURE). Our mission is to eliminate this bureaucracy. Our goal is to have one superintendent, one school board, and one district. The millions that will be saved will allow our schools to expand the curriculum available to our children.

The people of California, excluding Tuolumne County, voted to restore funding for our local schools. So the least we could do is not waste other people's money on preserving an antiquated, costly, inefficient, and unneeded bureaucracy.

Our target will be to get this measure on the ballot by November of 2014.

We hope when the time comes you will be able to help us achieve this most beneficial goal.
