Sonora High ag program in trouble

To the Editor:

Agriculture, the timber industry and tourism are the industries that support our county.

There are great concerns with the members of the ag community as the ag program at Sonora High has been greatly reduced for the coming school year. What will happen to the FFA organization?

With community support Summerville High School, with approximately 390 students, has a very active program with the teacher teaching one science class in addition to ag. Sonora High has 1,000 students with a greatly reduced program - there is something wrong with this picture.

The community as a whole has always been supportive of our young people and the ag programs of the schools which is evident with the Junior Livestock auction purchases at the fair netting over $250,000. Even in this tough economy the county has faced over the past couple of years the community has rallied behind our young people.

FFA is a very important part of the ag program. The FFA program teaches integrity, responsibility, leadership qualities and a commitment to the community. All of which are lifelong skills which help develop dedicated and responsible citizens.

Leadership is critical to developing the life skills of our young people. The school needs to take a close look at the current program - expand on it not reduce it and keep the current teacher, Stan Kellogg, who has 25 years experience. He has a very positive effect on his students and give 150 percent.

Please don't forget the obligation of a school is to provide the best education and opportunity to all students and to provide them with the skills to be productive adults and members of the community. These students are our future.
