Military museum is a local treasure

To the Editor:

We have all heard about war stories from our history books. So come and see for yourself the gear that our local veterans used.

The Tuolumne County Veterans Military Museum, located at 9 N. Washington St., houses artifacts from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Middle Eastern wars.

The museum is loaded from floor to ceiling with historical memorabilia. On item that stands out is the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest ranking medal. Master Sgt. John Cavaiani was awarded this medal for his heroic services in Vietnam.

Jim Rucker, a World War II veteran, gave some Sonora High School students a tour of this informative museum. We were fascinated by the uniforms of servicemen and nurses, WASP (Women's Airforce Service Pilots) history, the weapons and supplies used, even the origin of the Hell's Angels pilots. We recommend that you visit the Tuolumne County Veterans Military Museum to honor the memory of the men and women who served and died so that we may remain free.
