Against Columbia apartment project

To the Editor:

Recently your front page featured the article "Columbia planners deny apartment proposal." Normally I am a proponent of private property rights and affordable housing measures but after attending the meeting mentioned in the article I am firmly opposed to this project. The plan is for 80 units on 5 acres. It features 6 two-story buildings surrounded completely by garages and carports. The look is institutional, to say the least. Putting 80 units on 5 acres is like trying to put a size 9 foot in a size 6 shoe. They will have to do major site preparation, including "topping" and/or dynamiting the limestone bedrock and removing virtually all the native vegetation. I can hear Joni Mitchell singing "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" right now.

The developers own the large property known as the Pedro Y right across the street from this site. Why don't they locate the apartments on that site with direct access off Highway 49 and thereby avoid widening of Parrotts Ferry Road, which they are proposing?

This is not the right use of this 5 acres due to concerns about water, roads, public safety and aesthetics. The Board of Supervisors will address this issue at their meeting on April 16 at 1:30 p.m. If you don't want the entrance to Columbia to look like San Jose, please attend the meeting and voice your concerns.
