Confusion abounds on guns and the gun control issue

To the Editor:

When it comes to the debate over gun control I think there is some confusion with terminology especially when it comes to semiautomatic. A trigger pull with a semiautomatic firearm fires the round, ejects the casing, and chambers a new round ready to fire but only with an additional trigger pull. The features that are used to classify a rifle an assault rifle, flash suppressor, pistol grip, telescopic stock, etc., have nothing to do with how they function. It is like putting a lift kit, big wheels and a chrome package on a pickup. An assault rifle functions no differently than the standard 22 semi automatic rifle.

At close range at which all the shootings have occurred a 22 in no less lethal. A majority of fatalities where guns are used are due to 22 calibers. Dianne Feinstein and others wrongly refer to assault rifles as weapons of war. Military assault weapons have the option of firing semi or full auto. Assault rifles resemble them in appearance only not function. Profiling by appearance isn't tolerated elsewhere, why here?

A better path to reduce gun violence is to look at how our society's tolerance for violence has increased, value and respect for life and respect for others in general has decreased.

The media has to seriously evaluate how their saturation coverage of these events set off and turn disturbed individuals into a twisted form of a celebrity. Both of these issues need to be addressed for a lot of reasons.

When it comes to guns let's better enforce laws that are already on the books before creating more. The Second Amendment is about more than home protection, hunting or target practice so let's not rush to throw out assault rifles because they look or sound scary.
