Sonora High band has a rich history

To the Editor:

Congratulations to the Golden Regiment Band of Sonora High School on their 30th anniversary recently celebrated! And how great it was to honor all the seniors in the band at the last football game. What would the games and parades in Sonora be without the lively, enthusiastic music of the band?

We must not forget that there has always been a band at the high school. My mother was in the band in the 1930s. I was in the band, known as the "Wildcat Band" in the 60s under the leadership of John Gottschalk and Dwight Cannon. We were invited and played for the opening at the State Fair in Sacramento each September.

A highlight was the band playing the opening ceremony at the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. Obviously the opening ceremony was not what is it today. I remember watching the athletes marching in as we played in the freezing weather. The band played at the East West football games every December as well as Stanford University football game halftime shows.

The band participated in concert band competitions all over the state and always came away with blue medals. The band was so respected for its talent it was even invited to the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena! But we had to decline as it was too expensive to go. The band did manage to make it to play at the World's Fair in Seattle too! All these events happened in the four years of my high school days in the early 60s. Band members were looked up to and we did put the small town of Sonora on the map for many people who didn't know where Sonora was. What great memories and fun times were had on the long bus rides to those events. The great Wildcat Band!
