Gun control is people control

To the Editor:

The fervor with which gun control nuts fret over inanimate objects is alarming and laughable. The simple truth that any gun, regardless of the size, caliber or number of bullets, can't independently cause anyone harm without an operator seems to be lost on these folks. They say they want to control guns or gun access, but when you point out that they are not asking to control guns, but to control people, you get that bewildered "I don't understand" look.

Those behind advertising and campaigns to eliminate private gun ownership understand that gun control is people control - they want to have more control. An armed populace is a significant barrier to their long-term aspirations to manage (rule) the lives of others.

A fundamental truth: Regardless of the power of our inventions, even the progress in terms of size and physical capability of the human body, the basic human condition is unchanged since antiquity. Whether you read Homer, the Bible, etc. the same positives (love, courage and honor) and negatives (envy, sloth, arrogance) have been and are part of the human condition. Just look at the situation in North Korea, Syria, Egypt, Burma, Venezuela, even Russia to understand that all the evil in man is also present today.

This is where hubris plays a role. The fundamental prerequisite of those clamoring for people control disguised as "reasonable gun control" is that an evolution of our government to a tyranny couldn't happen here.

Hitler and Mussolini were elected, and the communist regimes in the former Soviet Union, China, Cuba and North Korea were ostensibly supported by the majority when they took power - they disarmed citizens and killed millions.

The best way to protect children in schools is to provide professional protection, such as at the school the Obama girls attend.
