Tabloid antics are not appreciated

To the Editor:

I always considered The Union Democrat more of a small town family oriented newspaper and not a tabloid. I am beginning to wonder. The headline on the cover page of the Dec. 28-30 edition titled "No arrests in throat slitting incident" could easily have been replaced with something less graphic ... "No arrest in Tuolumne assault." What's the point, do you think that the shock value of the headline will sell more papers? Just my opinion.

New era for veteran services to begin

To the Editor:

On Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, a new era in veterans' services begins when the Tuolumne County Veterans Service Office (VSO) reopens after the holiday furlough.

Beth Barnes has retired and Michelle McMasters has been elevated to fill the position of Senior Veteran Representative vacated by Beth.

Beth will be sorely missed but has served our nation's veterans well for 30 years and we wish her and her family a long and meaningful retirement. Vickie Sides has been hired to fill Michelle's vacated position and we welcome her into the realm of veterans' affairs and have great confidence in her ability to become a valued veterans' advocate.

The VSO is one of the best-kept secrets in Tuolumne County. This office is a valuable resource for veterans of all generations and we encourage all veterans and their families to avail themselves of these services.

The office is located in the old Tuolumne General Hospital, on Nevada Street, across from the main Sonora Post Office and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

Stop by and visit the VSO ladies, bring your DD 214 and let's see what you may have coming in the way of benefits.

All branches of the service, all generations. A veteran is a veteran is a veteran.
