Society - not just guns - to blame

To the Editor:

The recent disaster at Newtown emphasizes the changes in our society precipitated by our attitudes, actions and responsibilities. The two main components of this disaster are the weapon and the action of the person with the weapon. Do not let changes in gun laws happen without corresponding changes in behavior laws. Changes in our laws must include both components to accomplish what we all deem necessary. Because the changes in these components will involve constitutional issues, we must all recognize the importance of changes for the greater good (saving lives). Elimination of violence displayed in video games and movies, responsibilities of those who keep guns in their homes without proper security, development of simple "in home" tests that can be applied to determine the attitude and propensity of others towards violence must be a start. Penalties for those who do not see the wisdom in these changes must be beyond time in jail.

These penalties should include severe fines, immediate loss of weapons, immediate loss of driver's licenses, loss of vehicles (to transport weapons), and loss of homes to store weapons (similar to drug enforcement procedures). It is unconditionally irresponsible to promote or facilitate any form of violence. This type of behavior must carry corresponding reductions in freedom. No one has the right to do harm to others!

Praise for serving the community

To the Editor:

I would like to say thank you all of the individuals, churches, community organizations, facility providers who have stepped forward and served our area this year. Hardly a weekend during this holiday season that we have not seen some free meals, gifts, or some activity to help one another.

This is what makes living in Tuolumne County special.
