Medical decisions are parental rights

To the Editor:

I am shocked and dismayed by the Arizona news article about a parent removing their daughter who suffers from leukemia from a hospital without a doctor's approval.

Why am I shocked and dismayed? Because, the parents are being pursued by the police for "child endangerment." What about the hospital? They poisoned the 11-year-old girl with drugs and then cut off her arm.

What do the doctors and hospital have to do qualify for "child endangerment?" Cut off her other arm? Cut off her leg?

The authorities also say the young patient might die under her parent's care. What they don't say is how long this young girl might live under the hospital's care. She has already contracted an infection the hospital could only cure by cutting off her arm.

Interesting.

Right to bear arms, not harm

To the Editor:

It is not particularly likely that my dismay over the shooting deaths of 20 school children in Connecticut will much resonate with this county. Our foothill communities are not known as centers of enlightenment. However, someone has to speak up and urge all to read the Second Amendment and thereby learn that the Constitution accords the right to bear arms to "members of a well regulated militia." Our shooter was not a member of any militia, well regulated or otherwise.

It really is time to have a serious conversation about what kind of country we want to be.
