'Forgotten War' in Afghanistan

To the Editor:

I watched three different news stations over three nights. Not one story was spent on how the wars are going in Afghanistan or Iraq. I was in the Vietnam War at the latter stages. To be of no value sucks. The only thing I hear about the war is who is going to get political credit after the Navy Seals and support troops whacked Bin Laden. All service personnel should get more credit in the new/new/new "forgotten war."

Oversight of employee activities

To the Editor:

Regarding the former county employee who was just arrested on suspicion of stealing county assets by running a ticket agency out of his office, I am amazed that someone could get away with this for over two years without it being noticed. The article in The Union Democrat said that the guy had made "thousands" of phone calls out of state and to foreign countries during the time he worked at the county. How is it that no one noticed this?

When I worked as a financial controller, I would go through the company phone bills every month to make sure that no one in the company was using the phone for personal reasons, either for calls or for texts. Any foreign calls made would stand out like a sore thumb. It seems as if no one in the county was (or is?) doing this, which is not very encouraging. Sounds like controls are a little lax at the county and could do with some tightening up.

Editor's Note: The former county employee referenced in the letter above has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges.

Law and Justice Center

To the Editor:

Fiscal responsibility as practiced by Tuolumne County supervisors and bureaucrats with regard to the "proposed" new Law and Justice Center is at least arrogant, and possibly a bit insulting. They describe the project as cost saving, beneficial, necessary and publicly supported. We on planet earth use words and phrases like why ?, expensive, ridiculous, potholes, hidden agenda and steppingstone.
