TOT tax needed

To the Editor:

I take exception to Mr. Beaty's letter of April 10. Taxes are needed to pay for essential services, the problem is when the money is spent otherwise.

The state has unwisely decided to close parks to save money, to the detriment of our local economy, without even knowing how much the closures will cost. When all is said and done the resulting "savings" will not be worth the damage caused to our economy. In typical Tuolumne County fashion, people have rallied to the cause of saving Railtown. The fairgrounds and Railtown attract a large number of visitors to our county with big benefits to our economy. Local recreation is also a benefit of these facilities.

Expanding the Transient Occupancy Tax is a way for visitors to pay for supporting Railtown and the fairgrounds. A "yes" vote for the TOT is a vote to keep our economy from slipping further because of the loss of the fairgrounds and Railtown. A "no" vote is a slap in the face to our neighbors whose business will be jeopardized by the loss of the fairgrounds and Railtown.

Now, back to Mr. Beaty. How would you save Railtown, or do you even care? A narrow minded "no to any tax" mentality is irresponsible. You need to look at the reason for the tax, if it is because of bad spending say no, if it is for a needed service say yes. In my humble opinion the TOT is needed to save Tuolumne County's economy!
