Pension reform needed

To the Editor:

Yes, rethink is an awkward word for Americans but common in British circles. But, Californians need to rethink their public pension systems. It is obviously too generous by virtue of the fact it is bankrupting governments. Strong unions are often necessary for workers but when they kill the golden goose they are offensive. Also, don't forget that our politicians let the Unions lead them from fiscal responsibility.

Those pot holes common in our highways are now caused by over generous pension systems. It is easy to talk about reducing free health care plans and have pensioners contribute but something more dramatic is needed. Since over 15,000 pensioners receive over $100,000 per year and many close to $200,000 we have to rethink the application of paying retirees based on their highest salaries.

When working, a fire chief deserves more than a beginner fireman but does that chief need to have that reward the rest of his or her life? No! If you think "yes," please remember governments cannot afford that "yes."

The great goosenapping

To the Editor:

What has this county come to when the District Attorney's office will waste their time, the courts time and the scant resources of the county to prosecute an alleged "goosenapping" case. If that is all they have to do why can't we cut some positions in the DA's office, especially in their investigative department? Maybe the court should have found the DA's office guilty of wasting the courts time, pursuing a frivolous case and then mandated that they donate some serious community service time to help offset the staff time that has been wasted. The DA should be ashamed.
