Obamacare and

the Catholic Bishops

The bishops of my church have lost credence. When I was read Bishop Blair's letter in the middle of Mass regarding Obamacare (and the changes it will bring in 2013), and how I need to follow my conscience against it, I realized that his letter had nothing to do with my faith or first amendment rights. The bishop's letter about Obamacare is politically based and constitutes another betrayal that goes against my Catholic values.

I believe in Obamacare and all the good it presents. It gives me hope for the less fortunate in our society. It is a Christ message, fulfilling the privilege of health care for everyone. There are 150 Americans who will die today because of no health care. Obamacare even protects a woman having a baby who might otherwise choose abortion. The bishops have sided with the GOP in an election year.

We have been living with legal abortion since 1963. My faith and the Catholic institutions have never been threatened by this law of the land. Should they have been? No, because we have had to manage and juggle the good and bad parts of this law of the land. Obamacare deserves the same discernment based on Christ's message of social justice.

Finally, we will have medical care for all, and the good far outweighs the bad. It has been approved by the House and the Senate, a big hurdle. If the bishops act prudently and quit being politically motivated, they will praise the greater good of Obamacare. I ask the bishops to get out of the political arena and point to the moral good in line with Christ's message.
