Belated Thanksgiving thanks

To the Editor:

Our family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the entire emergency medical team that responded to our call from the Fieldstone community of Murphys. Ironically it was on Thanksgiving night. The emergency response team did an awesome job starting with the 9-11 dispatcher who thought to mention it was a holiday and some of the responders might show up in their own vehicles or street clothes. The first responder was there in just 4 minutes, the nameless heroes who were probably home with their own families still arrived quickly. We found our family in a very serious situation and faced a real chance of losing a loved one that night. Thanks to this team, we did not lose a loved one, but gained reassurance in knowing that living in a small community does not mean slower response times.

The Thanksgiving of 2011 may not be the one this family will choose as our most memorable but will truly be the one with the most thanks to give. We wish we knew all of the responders' names but you know who you are and God bless you all. A special thanks to first responder Pat Murphy who took the time to check on our family afterward and to the Chaplin who came, sat and prayed with us while the team worked their magic. Our family has had many obstacles to get through since that night two months ago but thanks to all of you, "Mom made it!"

Todd Moreno's battle with ALS

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the article written by Miss Peterson on Jan. 16, about Todd Moreno and his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). First off, Miss Peterson needs to receive an award for such a great story. I know first hand what it's like to see a loved one pass away from such a horrible disease that has no cure. In 1986, I was a junior in high school when my mother was diagnosed with ALS. It was so hard to see her go from 145 pounds to 90 pounds in a few short months. Within a year, just a few weeks after her 59th birthday, she died. I did see the video featuring Mr. Moreno and it was well made. It brought back memories of what my family and I went through. This tax season, from your California tax refund, you have the ability to donate $10 or more toward ALS research on Form 414. I know there would be numerous people who would thank you for it.
