Dream Act response

To the Editor:

In response to Mark W. Leyva's letter on the Dream Act. No Mark, unfortunately you are not alone. Many people do not think through this situation fully. Children are brought to America by their parents. They have no control over this. We put millions of dollars into elementary education, bilingual education, and programs to educate these children. One in thousands makes it and become eligible and motivated to attend college. At this point you want us to tell them, "No, you are illegal and must pay full out of state tuition. You're not eligible for any scholarships, public or private. Neither you nor your parents can qualify for student loans. Despite your struggle, your success beyond all odds and your dreams, you can't go any further."

How many families, legal or illegal, can afford out of state tuition with no scholarship assistance? For even a state college the cost would be around $16,000 per year. It is a fact that education increases success. Refusing to assist children who have proven to be successful students is economically unsound. After all the money spent on their education to this point, why would we want to prevent them from becoming college graduates and raising families that will break the cycle of poverty? Illegal immigrants are not going to go away. Let's at least assist those children who have proven to be exceptionally worthy and are in this situation through no fault of their own.
