Manure in Kennedy Meadows

To the Editor:

During this unusual winter, I've had occasion to day-hike through Kennedy Meadow. During these forays I've noticed that manure has been spread across the meadow. I must assume that the Kennedy Meadows Resort has either done the spreading or has approved the spreading. Much of the manure is well within one hundred feet of the Stanislaus River.

When precipitation finally does come to the Sierra, there will inevitably be runoff from the meadow into the river. I cannot imagine that the increased bacteria from manure flowing down river will be good either for wildlife or humans who rely on it as a source of water. This is not the first year that I've noticed this fall manure spreading, so I must assume it is not a one-time event.

With the recent change in control over Kennedy Meadows, it is not clear to me who is responsible for the environmental monitoring of that beautiful canyon. When I asked the Forest Service, I was given the following three organizations as those that should or might be interested: Mother Lode Land Trust, Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District, and Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center.

I am not a biologist, ecologist or environmental expert of any kind. I simply love our mountain environment and want to see it kept safe and beautiful for us and those who follow. I requested a response in an email to the aforementioned groups. If manure runoff into the Stanislaus is not considered to be a problem, I asked that it be so stated.
