Union Democrat staff

Columbia Elementary School

To the Editor:

Thank you so much for your editor's column regarding the president of the Columbia Elementary School Board's husband's rant at the meeting this month. For so long I have wanted to commend Lacey Peterson for the excellent job of reporting that she has done. She told this story in a clear and unbiased manner. I am proud of the excellence of The Union Democrat. I wanted to respond to Mr. Phelan's statement but was told I was not allowed to speak in reply to what had been said. This was the first meeting I attended and did not know the protocol in addressing the board. Now I know.

According to Mr. Phelan the incident happened 19 months ago and everyone needs to move on. The point is no one at the school reported it. It was like Penn State in that a mother of a student had to report it. At least at Penn State the president of the university, the head of the athletic department and the much respected Joe Paterno were all fired for sweeping the sexual abuse under the rug.

Case closed? The community cannot let this die until there is accountability. So far there has been none.
