Church theft

To the Editor:

To the person or persons who broke into and robbed the Sonora Church of Christ. Not only did you steal from the Christian members of this congregation, but more importantly you stole from the Lord. I hope when you meet your maker, and you will because nobody lives forever, you have a good excuse when he asks you why you stole from his church. Whatever your answer - it won't be good enough.

Gas prices, Big Oil profits

To the Editor:

I read the Oct. 31 letter by Sean Owens and agreed with everything he said until it came to "drill, dig, and drill some more" and the price of gas will drop.

I would point out the one fact he didn't: no one can control what oil companies charge for gasoline. These are private, for profit companies operating within our laws and rules for free enterprise. Mr. Owens should realize if oil was one dollar a barrel they could charge $6 a gallon for their gasoline. That is our free enterprise system.

The second item about employment picking up is true for the drilling operators and related businesses. Remember this though: the well that blew out in the gulf and poured millions of barrels of oil onto our shores was in the process of being capped, not put into production. There is no rule or law requiring a well after being drilled to be put into production. How many of these capped good wells the oil companies have already, we'll never know. If there is a shortage, why aren't there any lines at the stations? All data indicates production is currently down, at a low, oil stocks are high, profits are up. Kind of makes me suspicious.
