Cut property taxes
To the Editor:
Have you seen the growing number of empty buildings and offices in Sonora and Jamestown? I think we passed scary and have reached nightmarish. There is record poverty everywhere and child hunger as never before seen, here and elsewhere. So consider if this might help us at least locally - how about a 40 percent across the board property tax cut for Tuolumne County homeowners? I am not talking about cutting more jobs - we have already cut too many. I am talking about cutting hundreds of millions in wasteful and unnecessary spending here in Tuolumne County.
We are digging ourselves a hole which will soon swallow up what little of our wealth that we have left. Think about it, if your pay drops or you lose your job, your income tax drops proportionately. If you buy less, you pay less in sales taxes. Even those folks who have money to invest, pay less when they make less (they also get to write off some losses). Why not the same for our property taxes?
So how about it Tuolumne County, give us a break, stop the nonsensical wasteful spending. Give us a few bucks to spend. And think about this, if you build another courthouse in the middle of a pasture, won't that just lead to more empty buildings in our "civic center" area? Is there a better, more intelligent way to handle our needs - you betcha. Is it possible to stem the loss of jobs and families up here? Not a doubt in my mind, but not by staying the same course of the past decade. Time to prioritize, not just rehash the same failed plans and policies. Here's one idea - underwrite Railtown 1897 and save Jamestown businesses. They are all our tax dollars -use them wisely.
