Picking on Pendley

To the Editor:

Just exactly who is it in your organization that is driving the excessive trashing of the Columbia Elementary School Board and John Pendley? It appears that you or someone, with some power, in your organization has a vendetta against either the Board or Pendley. Are you the culprit? If not, why do you allow this kind of trash to continue? It is time to shut up and let this school get back to educating students instead of trying to appease a two-bit editor of a two-bit paper.

Jim McCown

Editor's note: There is no vendetta. The Union Democrat has always demanded that public officials be held accountable for their actions. That approach to reporting - and that responsibility to our readers - will never change. Also, our newspaper costs four bits - 50 cents.

Coffill Park and Gold Rush history

To the Editor:

The front-page article on tree trimming at Coffill Park that ran Sept. 21 was nice, but missed a golden opportunity to add some real spice. Too bad the paper didn't mention the two-story livery stable that used to be there and the 1849 gold strike at that same location, not to mention the intense competition between the original Sonorans and other miners at that time and place.

A visit to our County Museum and History Center, 158 Bradford Ave., is well worth the effort. Tuolumne County gold played an important role in the development of California and we are still sitting on a gold mine of fascinating information and artifacts from this era. For more information you can call 209-532-1317 or visit the Tuolumne County Historical Society website at www.tchistory.org.
