Tuolumne County

Habitat for Humanity

To the Editor:

In my mind there are three seminal times of involvement with Habitat for Humanity.

The first is when you inform a family that they have been chosen to receive a home. Their lives have been drastically changed and you know it, and they know it. I cry.

The second time is when that first wall goes up on a Habitat House like it did this week on Unit One and Two at the Parrotts Ferry Road village project. I sniffle a bit.

And the third time is when the keys to their new home is handed to the chosen family. I cry, can't help it.

I have said many times that if I never do anything right in my life, starting Habitat in Tuolumne County, was a right and good thing to do.

Ruth Callahan, a wonderful Christian lady who lives in Jamestown, and I took that vital first step in December 1997 to bring this great charity to the people of Tuolumne County.

Acquiring the Columbia subdivision was a God-send and an opportunity to put more low-income families in simple, decent housing so they can become all that God intended for them to be.

Habitat needs help. Money, materials, volunteers.

This county is the most generous county on the face of God's earth and we all need to step up and help Habitat with their Christian-driven mission.
