Know the facts

To the editor;

Regarding the "Legal Aliens" letter (Ginger D'Onofrio, July 2).

I don't have a need to see my name in print, however, I take exception to the letter's insinuations.

Unless we are Native Americans, our forefathers also came here from another country. It is unadulterated ignorance to assume all legal aliens are of the same ilk. Have you ever been assisted in a restaurant or store by someone with a non-American accent, or administered to by a doctor or nurse with an accent?

Are we to assume such people are also collecting welfare and furnishing their homes through the Red Cross? I think not.

Before becoming a citizen, I was one of those card-carrying, taxpaying legal aliens you're speaking of. Not only was I gainfully employed within days of my arrival, I also had proof I would not be a burden on this country during my intended brief stay.

Shortly after I arrived, I too, contacted the Red Cross. However this legal alien was offering her services. I believe in volunteering, and when this county was ablaze in 1987, this legal alien, along with other volunteers, spent many hours of each day at the fairgrounds helping our displaced neighbors.

Before any of us make derogatory public statements we need to know the facts and consider the ramifications.

Yes, some legal aliens do have their hand out, but they are outnumbered by those who take nothing, have jobs, and contribute to their community. Rather than casting aspersions and generalizing, let's stop trashing those we know very little about.
