Love will prevail

To the editor:

Sonora is better than the letter (Jim Gallno, Feb. 9) that suggested gay marriage is a "Pandora's box" that could lead to bestiality. I don't doubt that one could find similarly offensive letters from the "good ol' days" defending slavery, arguing against women voting, and against mixed race couples. The sad part is we still have to read this kind of stuff in 2009. This issue will drag on in court, but don't doubt that love will prevail. Thank goodness for that.

Buy American

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the Feb. 6 article, "Buy U.S. clause draws fire from home and abroad."

If the American people spend an equal amount of dollars on domestic products and on imported products, which one do you think will create more jobs in the United States? Some people tell me they can't afford domestic products because they cost more. This is as it should be! Why? Because our standard of living is higher than those in most of the world.

Go on the Internet, type in "made in the U.S.A.," lots of stuff comes up. Why are we trying to compete with other countries that are paying one-tenth of our wages? We used to make our own toasters, can openers, TVs, radios and the list goes on. They were quality products.

How many jobs do you think it would create here if Americans only purchased domestically manufactured products? Is it going to happen? Maybe, maybe not. We saw the pollution in China during the Olympic Games. I don't recall that much pollution in any American manufacturing center in years, can you?

Buying domestic products is not protectionist, it is survival. Do we need a law saying that the U.S. government has to use domestic products only in public works projects? They are your tax dollars. Where do you want to spend them?

Whose fault is this mess anyway? I say it is the American consumers' fault. If we didn't buy so many imported goods, they wouldn't be here. I have a bumper sticker on my truck that says "Made in the U.S.A. equals jobs in the U.S.A."

Hunting license

To the editor:

I would like to comment on the letter titled "Conflicting paths" (Laura Vernon, Feb. 6):

Laura, you wrote: "Since U.S. Airways has built its flight paths to compete with the migratory pathway of Canada geese, don't you think that Flight 1549 was on an inevitable collision course? What should we do now? Do we continue to fly the same path that swallowed up some birds which brought down a plane, or do we share the airways with the migratory Canada geese? There are times when humanity oversteps its bounds, and this appears to be one of them."

Laura, you seem to know quite a bit about this subject and I was wondering if you would happen to know when is the best time for hunting the geese there and how much a hunting license is? Thank you for any input.

Different voice

To the editor,

Thank you for including Garrison Keillor's column ("Americans Celebrate John Updike," Feb. 5) on your editorial comments page. His is a different voice for Tuolumne County readers: tart, liberal, ironic, but also Christian. His piece on John Updike hit the perfect note of appreciation and grief for the loss of a remarkable writer. Those of us who love Updike's work are comforted by Keillor's eulogy. You provided the piece when Bay Area papers did not.
