Letters to the Editor for November 26, 2008

Botched headline

To the Editor:

Is there something here that I don't understand? A headline on the

front page of the Nov. 24 Union Democrat says, "Obama received strong

support in county."

Foolish me, thinking that McCain had won in Tuolumne County by a

respectable margin, I went on to read the rest of the story and found

that out of 58 precincts, Obama had a majority in 12. Does that sound

strong to you?

I guess my definition of "strong support" needs some re-defining.

Surprising editorial

To the Editor:

Your Nov. 14 editorial, "MWSP Fire District should not give up efforts," surprises me.

How would you like me, or anyone else, to say to you ... "give me

XXX dollars annually, and we will spend it as we please; you have no

say in the matter."

Perhaps you have an oversight problem as to why this country threw

off the yoke of England in 1776. There was the Stamp Act, for one,

where we had no representative say in the matter.

With the screw ups the non-elective fire board has done in the past

... and we the citizens have no votes for who is on this board.

Should we be willing to go along with their "ideas" and give them

all the monies they want to do what they want with it, and tell us it

is for our own good? They do not have to account to us for their bad

spending habits. We cannot vote them on or off MWSP Fire Board.

A year from now we could find ourselves in a greater depression

than the one of 1929. Our money is of no value within itself, and many

of us are struggling to make ends meet now.

You can join us on the street corners trying sell apples to feed our family, if we could only find buyers.

Roy Manley, Mi-Wuk Village
