Barbara Hush Bowin
Feb. 16, 1929 - Aug. 10, 2014
Barbara Bowin died Sunday, Aug. 10, at her home. She was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Marysville, Ohio, to Dwight and Vesta McCracken Hush. She was 85 years old.
Barbara was talented musically and was often asked to sing at weddings and other events, even at an early age. She was active in sports and had a competitive spirit. She attended local schools and later Ohio Wesleyan University, majoring in elementary education.
In 1950, she met Jim Bowin, manager of a business in Marysville, at a picnic. Each was with other partners, but there was a mutual attraction and in 1951 they were married. They very soon moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif., where Jim would be working. Their four children were born there and they lived there for 20 years.
Wherever they were, Barbara was always busy with volunteer work, especially within their church, which was an important part of both their lives. She enjoyed being hostess at morning teas with the wives of foreign students, whose husbands were attending University of California, Davis, doing postgraduate work. Always, though, Barbara was the attentive mother, active in the lives of her children, all of whom would later attend college. Her many interests included music, gardening, volunteering and attending the kids' sporting events. She conducted a popular Bible study class for many years, where her teaching background helped. In many ways, whatever the situation, she was the "go to" person for advice.
Barbara is survived by Jim, her husband of nearly 63 years; daughters, Laurie and her husband Joe Barnes, Anne and her husband Hans Fors, Julie and her partner Debbie Wilson; her son, James Neil; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be private. Any remembrances may be made to Presbyterian Women of the First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, Calif., or in memoriam to a church of choice.
Sonora resident Doris Kisling, 87, died Aug. 11, 2014, at her home at Meadow View Manor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in 2009.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, Ed and Deanna, of Sonora, Don and Connie, of North Carolina, and Chris and Deanna, of Clovis; grandchildren, Katie, of Sonora, Jessica, of Oregon, Aaron, of Louisiana, Whitney, of New York, Kelly and Billy Gallagher, of Santa Barbara, Kenny, of San Luis Obispo, and Kory, of Clovis; great-grandchildren, Shelby Wood and Sydney Kisling, of Sonora.
