Archie Lee Barnett Sr.

April 1, 1942 - Aug. 6, 2014

Archie Lee Barnett Sr., born on April 1, 1942, passed away on Aug. 6, 2014, with his loving family by his side.

Archie was born to Nancy and Luther Barnett in Tahlequah, Okla., and was raised in Angels Camp, Calif. Archie was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather who was passionate about spending time with all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He made it a point to never miss an event whether it was a game, birthday, or performance and cherished his time with his family.

Archie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Garlene; children and their spouses, Chip (Wanda) Barnett, Abrina (Don) Micetich, Luke (Sandy) Barnett and Dawnelle (Tim) Ballard. As well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sarah (Matt), Mitchelle, A.J., Bailey, Alex, Anthony, Spenser, Taylor, Jared, Payton, Ava and Nora; siblings, Paulyne Bacoccini, Ray (Diane) Barnett, Joyce (Ron) Lopez, Jay (Colleen) Barnett, Ed (Ginny) Barnett and Bob Barnett, as well as his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Archie took pride in and will be remembered for serving his community both through his career at the Altaville Market and Angels Food Market and as a dedicated coach. He loved his community and served selflessly where he took pride in every person he had the honor to coach. Archie always chose to see the good in everyone and dedicated his life to improving those around him. He took pride in shaping the lives of youth through sports. He was a pillar in our community and was proud to be one of the founding coaches for the AMA.

He will be remembered as a gentle, genuine, strong and loving man. His presence will be greatly missed but his memory will live on through the hearts of his family and community.

A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 at the Bret Harte High School Lower Gym. A reception will follow.

John D. Tate

Nov. 7, 1936 - Aug. 9, 2014

John D. Tate died on Aug. 9, 2014, at Avalon Care Home in Sonora. John spent six years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a staff sergeant and crew chief on KC 135 airplanes. In 1963, at the time of discharge, John changed over his mechanical skills to the logging industry.

Settling in Tuolumne County fulfilled John's teenage dream of living in the mountains. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. John taught his children and grandchildren skills in each sport, and the history of each area. Over the years, in fond memories, they teach their children.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathaleen; his daughter and husband, Lori and Robert Taylor, of Tuolumne City; his son and wife, John and Tifany Tate, of Sonora; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one foster granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. All loved within his family circle. John has two sisters, Jacqulyn Ursino, of

Tennessee, and Hazel Marsh, of Nevada; and cousin, Donald Tate, of Tuolumne City.

John was preceded in death by his much missed daughter, Janice; and his cousin, Clyde Tate.

A graveside service was planned for today at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne City. A reception followed at the Methodist Church Hall.

Esther Gladys Handy

May 10, 1912 - Aug. 7, 2014

Esther Gladys Handy passed away Aug. 7, 2014. She was born on May 10, 1912, in Tuolumne, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, Serafino Spinetto and Anna Adele Cafferetta Spinetto; her husband, Harold Herschel Handy; sisters, Mary Ames and Evelyn Couture; and brothers, Albino Spinetto and Adolph Spinetto.

Esther lived at the Avalon Care Center in Sonora for the past 14 years, where her family and friends were frequent visitors. Over the years, she worked at the Gem Cafe, Kimball Hotel, Chestnut Cafe and Hans Bosshard's Bakery in Tuolumne. She had a long career at Summerville Elementary School as a custodian and in the office as a clerk for a total of more than 40 years. She also enjoyed collecting coins and antique dishes.

She leaves two sons and their spouses, George Joe and Elsie Handy, and Jack and Shirley Handy. Esther had four grandchildren and their spouses, Beth and Dave Foust, of Applegate, Brenda Handy, of Denver, Color., Craig and Fatima Handy, of Hilmar, and Christopher and Jennifer Handy, of Turlock; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Esther was also a beloved aunt and great-aunt. Having lived and worked her whole life in Tuolumne City she leaves many close friends.

At her request, no services will be held. Esther will be interred at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne City.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a charity of one's choice.
