Robert M. Madvig
April 17, 1922 - July 2, 2014
San Jose, Calif.
Bob grew up in Minneapolis. His life was shaped by the Great Depression and World War II.
Bob graduated from the University of Minnesota in electrical engineering and was quickly deployed by the U.S. Army to Berlin where he became commander of the Signal Corps Depot. There he met a young German woman, Barbara Neumann, who served as a translator for the Signal Corps. They fell in love and married in May 1947.
Bob designed and built their first home near Minneapolis on two acres purchased from a local farmer. There, they raised their three children while Bob pursued a career in electronics working for pioneer computer companies. When the Minnesota winters motivated them to look West, Bob took a position at Stanford Research Institute in California. Later he joined IBM and finished his career in San Jose in 1984.
When Bob retired, he and Barb moved to a home Bob designed in Cedar Ridge, Calif. For the next 20 years they enjoyed an active life in the mountains. Bob earned a pilot's license and he and Barbara were active in the Flying Samaritans, a charity that brought medical services to Baja California.
Barbara died in 2004 and a few years later Bob moved to a retirement community in San Jose to be closer to his children.
Bob is survived by his three children, Andrea Madvig, Philip Madvig and Christine Souza; by his brother, Donald Madvig; and by three grandchildren, Sarah Silva, David Souza and Ian Madvig. His grandson, Derek Souza and his sister, Evelyn Lee, predeceased him.
A private memorial service is planned.
