Hershel Lester Shaffer was born in Miami, Okla., to Harry and Dovie Shaffer on Jan. 21, 1923, and lived in several locations in Oklahoma.

He left Oklahoma in 1941 and moved to Stockton with his parents. While serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces, he met and married Dorothy Bauer on May 17, 1944, in El Paso, Texas. Their twins, Carol Lee and Michael Lee, were born shortly after his discharge from the service in 1945.

Hershel worked for the Marley Cooling Tower Company for 46 years in Stockton, retiring in January 1988. Dorothy and Hershel traveled in their motor home for several years and moved to Jamestown in January 1998. They spent winter seasons at their home in Yuma, Ariz. Hershel attended Sierra Bible Church in Sonora and was a member of the American Legion Stockton, Post No. 16.

Hershel passed away June 13, 2014, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 60 years; daughter, Carol Bay; a brother and four sisters.

The family is especially grateful to the members of the Hospice of the Sierra who did so much for Hershel his last days. They would also like to thank Tom, Stella, Barbara, Cindy and all the rest of the staff of the Pine Tree Restaurant who made "Pops" feel so special.

Services are being handled by Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery at 1 p.m. June 26, 2014, Harney Lane at Highway 99 in Lodi.

Glen William Griggs

March 5, 1961 - June 5, 2014

Glen William Griggs was born on March 5, 1961, in Mariposa, Calif. He died June 5, 2014.

He, with the rest of his family, spent his first five years at Briceburg at the Merced River. The family moved to Sierra Village in 1966. He attended Long Barn School, Twain Harte Elementary School and graduated from Summerville High School.

Glen's favorite sports were ice skating at Long Barn ice rink, downhill skiing at Dodge Ridge and riding his bright green dirt bike. He was a talented guitar player and loved all Patsy Cline songs. Glen was an accomplished roofer and "jack of all trades" that he learned from his father.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Maurine Griggs, of Arizona and Leonard and Lucille Tiska, of Florida; brothers, Danny Leonard Heuton, of Arizona, and Robert "Mikie" Heuton, of Florida, and his faithful dog, Shecote.

Remember, spend time with your loved ones because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say "I love you" to your loved ones, but most of all mean it.

A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember, to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. "Walk In Love" - Glen, February 2005.
