George Clifford Lowe

Oct. 28, 1918 - May 11, 2014

George Clifford Lowe died May 11, 2014. He was 95 years old.

He was born in Alviso, Calif., in a house his great-great-grandfather had dismantled and shipped from the East Coast. His great-great-grandfather was the leader of the Wade Party, known as the Jayhawkers that came out into Death Valley in 1849. They finally got to Alviso, where they started a business. The stagecoach that was bought by Wells Fargo Bank was later used to haul strawberries to Santa Cruz, among other things. In 1928, it was sold to Wells Fargo Bank for $500 and is now in the bank in San Francisco.

George attended Santa Clara University where he studied engineering. His first job was with the state as a surveyor on the highway south of San Francisco. When he left that job he then went to work for PG&E and moved to Manteca, Calif., in 1955. George worked for PG&E for 30 years before retiring.

The 10 acres near Manteca wasn't enough to keep him busy, so he went to work for Payless Drug Store in Manteca in the sporting goods section. He sold fishing and hunting supplies and gave advice because he loved to fish and hunt.

George and his wife moved to Sonora in 1986 and continued to work for Payless Drug Store in Sonora until it was changed to Rite Aid.

He always planted a big garden so there was enough for the family, visitors and everyone who stopped by. If he went to see someone he took things from his garden, especially squash.

George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Frances; his children, Margaret Ann Crow, of Sonora, Lester Wade Lowe, ofSonora, Jerry Staton, of Visalia; grandchildren, Caprice Pitman, of Manteca, Cherice Pitman, of Livermore, Mia Hanson, of Sonora, Terry Staton, of Visalia, JR Staton, of Visalia, Virginia Valentine, of Manteca, Sandra Staton, of Modesto, Lorraine Staton, of Arkansas, and Larry Staton ,of Oregon; 17 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his step-son, Gary Staton, of Manteca, in 2007; grandson, Pride Pitman, of Sonora, in 2005; granddaughter, Mary Staton, of Manteca, in 2006; his parents, three sisters and one brother.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 10039 Horseshoe Bend Road, Sonora. If you knew George come by and share the good times.
