Norma Jean Ghiorso

Nov. 20, 1928 - May 5, 2014

Norma Jean Ghiorso, 85, died Monday, May 5, at Sonora Regional Medical Center.

She migrated to California from Missouri with her mother and two sisters in the 1940s. Eventually the family settled in Tuolumne County where she met and married the love of her life, Lloyd John Ghiorso.

They made their home on the Ghiorso ranch which has been in the family since the mid-1800s. They both enjoyed the wildlife that found sanctuary there. She and Lloyd lived a frugal life but they loved weekend trips to Lake Tahoe. It was a rare trip that their winnings did not pay for all their expenses and send them home with money in their pockets!

The Catholic Church was an important part of her life. She taught Catechism classes to children at St. Ann's Church in Columbia and was a member of the Y.L.I.

She was blessed to have recently become a resident of Skyline Place. Here she blossomed and won the hearts of both residents and the caring staff with her quirky sense of humor.

She was preceded in death in 2001, by her husband Lloyd, after 49 years of marriage; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Ghiorso) West and her husband, Jack; mother and stepfather, Alice and Eugenio Caruso; sisters, Nadine Wright and Betty Barton and nephew Donnie Wright.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Betty (West) James, Denise and Dick Rogers, Lyle and Cheryl Barton, Brian and Robin Barton, all of Sonora, and Michael Wright of Manteca; her grand nieces and nephews, Betina James, Greg and Melissa Rogers, Nate Rogers, of Sonora, Joe and Lindsey Barton, of Prairieville, Louisiana, Hannah and Nick Baldrige, of Watsonville, Holly Barton, Abby Barton, of San Jose, Brett Barton, of Sonora; and five great-grand nieces and five great-grand nephews.

Services have been held.

He was a 30-year member at Sierra Bible Church, where he often enjoyed serving as a greeter and socializing with friends and parishioners.

Will was preceded in death by his wife in 2010.
