Christina Marie Effken

Aug. 29, 1956 - Jan. 25, 2014

Murphys resident Christina Marie Effken died Jan. 25 at her home. She was 56.

Ms. Effken was born in Liverpool, England, the daughter of Theodore and Madeline Effken.

She moved with her family to California when she was a child.

She graduated from Washington High School in Fremont and worked for the California Conservation Corps.

She met and later married Robert Cox. They had two children.

They lived in Dorrington before Ms. Effken and her children moved to Murphys in 1992.

She worked in retail for 20 years.

She enjoyed being outdoors and geology.

Ms. Effken was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Madeline and Giles Smith, of Belmont; two sons, Sean Perry Cox, of Santa Cruz, and Elliot Cox, of Sonora; and brother, Paul Effken, and his wife, Karen.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Utica Park, Highway 49, Angels Camp.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling Arrangements.

Richard 'Miles' Metzger

Aug. 29, 1950 - Dec. 8, 2013

Auburn resident Richard "Miles" Metzger died Dec. 8, at his home. He was 63.

He was born in Nevada City to Grant and Betsey Metzger. He moved with his family to Calaveras County in 1951.

His family moved to Menlo Park because of his father's career. Mr. Metzger attended Menlo Atherton High School.

He studied art and Latin American culture at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

He moved to Angels Camp in 1970 , where he opened a sculpture studio.

Mr. Metzger spent the early years of his professional sculpting career in Calaveras County.

He then accepted a teaching position at the University of Goias, in Brazil.

After teaching in South America, he moved to Napa Valley and opened a sculpture studio in downtown St. Helena.

In 1992, his sculpture "Guardians of the Gate" was placed at Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco.

Mr. Metzger was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Theodore Metzger.

He is survived by his partner, Alexa Welch, of Auburn; sons, Uleaf Metzger and his wife, Sarabeth, of Reno, and Cyrus Metzger, of Jenny Lind; and daughters, Gabriella Metzger, and Giovanna Metzger, of St. Helena; and five grandchildren.

Services have been held.

Lind Bros. Mortuary in Carmichael handled arrangements.

Deborah 'Debbie'(Lane) Lyon

Nov. 25, 1938 - Jan. 30, 2014

Jamestown resident Deborah 'Debbie' (Lane) Lyon died Jan. 30 at a Modesto hospital. She was 75.

Mrs. Lyon was born Berkeley, daughter of Benjamin and Alice Lane.

She was raised in Scarsdale, N.Y.

She graduated college from Sweet Briar College, Va., in 1960.

She married Bill Lyon in 1976 in Scarsdale.

Mrs. Lyon and her husband moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked in public relations for United Press International. She also worked as a field representative for an East Bay congressman.

Mrs. Lyon and her husband moved to Tuolumne County after seeing a newspaper advertisement of a Jamestown art shop for sale. She became owner and operator of Anne Saunders Art Gallery and Gifts in Jamestown.

Mrs. Lyon enjoyed spending time with friends, bowling and traveling. She volunteered at the Humane Society Thrift Store. She also served as a board member of Duende: Drama and Literature in Sonora.

Mrs. Lyon was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Lyon; and stepson, Scott Lyon.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, David and Lyza Lyon, of New Jersey, Anne and Steven Lyon, of New Jersey; and grandchildren, Dalylia and Ty Lyon, of New Jersey.

The Neptune Society of Stockton is handling arrangements.


WILLIAMS - William "Ricky" Williams, 65, of Groveland, died on Saturday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
