John Cokenes

Nov. 27, 1921 - Feb. 5, 2014

Sonora resident John Cokenes died Feb. 5 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 92.

Mr. Cokenes was born in Billings, Mont., the son of George and Sylvia Cokenes.

His family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when he was a child and he enjoyed watching the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mr. Cokenes served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Jean Chamberlain at Lake Tahoe in the 1940s. They settled in Castro Valley and had three children.

He worked as a machinist for Paco Pumps for 38 years in Oakland.

Mr. Cokenes and his wife retired to Sonora 30 years ago.

He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Cokenes was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Cokenes, in May 2006; and his parents.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Sally and Doug Clark, of Sonora, John R. Cokenes, of Sonora, and Steve and Donna Cokenes, of Livermore; grandchildren, Wyatt, Doug, Donald, John, Rich and Josh; and nine great-grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Kathryn Elizabeth Puterbaugh

March 5, 1924 - Feb. 11, 2014

Sonora resident Kathryn Elizabeth Puterbaugh died Tuesday at Avalon Care Center. She was 89.

Ms. Puterbaugh was born in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Fred and Cora Puterbaugh.

She was vice president of Garratt Callahan water purifying company in Burlingame for 30 years. She later retired to Arnold.

In 2007, she moved to Skyline Place in Sonora.

Ms. Puterbaugh is survived by her sister, Eleanor Burford; and nieces, Jennifer and Leslie, all of Paris, France; and nephews, Thomas Smedley, of Centennial, Colo., and Stephen Smedley, of Englewood, Colo.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at Skyline Place, 12811 Cabezut Road, Sonora.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.

Lynne Rae Lowery

Dec.4, 1946 - Feb. 10, 2014

Murphys resident Lynne Rae Lowery died Monday at her home. She was 67.

Mrs. Lowery was born in Alameda, the daughter of Virginia Miles and Raymond Hamburg.

She was a resident of Calaveras County for the past 40 years.

Mrs. Lowery worked many different jobs, including waitressing at the Murphys Hotel and electronic assembly at Tranex Electronics Co. in Vallecito. She retired as a cook from Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas.

Mrs. Lowery was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her children, Jason Lowery, of Salinas, Kelley Ziehlke, of Napa, and Kim Lock, of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

A private family graveside service will be held.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.


MARTINEZ - Sophia Santana Martinez,75, of Tuolumne, died Sunday at a family home in Turlock. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Tuolumne County Association of Realtors office, 14195 Tuolumne Road, Sonora. Allen Mortuary in Turlock is handling arrangements.

METZGER - Richard "Miles" Metzger, 63, an artist with a studio in Angels Camp, died Dec. 8, 2013, at his home in Auburn. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Miners Foundry Cultural Center, 325 Spring St., Nevada City.

ROMINE - Robert Romine, 70, of Sonora died Wednesday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral home is handling arrangements.
