James Hurley 'Jim' Kennedy

Feb. 27, 1925 - Nov. 24, 2013

Sonora resident James Hurley "Jim" Kennedy died Nov. 24 at Avalon Care Center. He was 88.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Lubbock, Texas, the son of George and Mary Kennedy.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a telephone lineman for the field artillery in France, Austria and Germany.

After his military service, he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a station agent in the western division. He retired in 1986 after 40 years of service.

He settled in Sonora in 2004 to be closer to family.

Mr. Kennedy enjoyed Dallas Cowboys football and Cincinnati Reds baseball. He enjoyed playing dominoes and card games at the Sonora Hills clubhouse.

Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by his son, Michael A. Kennedy.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bessie Louise Kennedy, of Sonora; his sons, James D. Kennedy, of Highland Ranch, Colo., and John C. Kennedy, of Twain Harte; grandchildren, Jeanine Minary and Danny Kennedy, of Colorado, Val Kennedy, of Utah, Keith Kennedy and Sue Hill, of Idaho, Chris Kennedy, of Sacramento, and Cathy Kennedy, of Grass Valley; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Ruth Cooper, of Duncan, Okla., and Maureen Laundrie, of San Jose.

Edwin M. McMahon

May 28, 1930 - Dec. 6, 2013

The Rev. Edwin M. McMahon died Dec. 6 at his home in Sonora. He was 83.

Mr. McMahon was born in Sonora to Anna Mae and Edwin Fremont McMahon. His father was a superintendent of the Mary Harrison and other gold mines in the Sonora area.

Mr. McMahon graduated from Sonora High School in the late 1940s. He attended Santa Clara University before entering the Jesuit order in 1953.

He earned a master's degree in philosophy from Gonzaga University in Washington and a doctorate in religious studies from the University of Ottawa in Canada in the early 1970s.

Mr. McMahon founded the Institute for BioSpiritual Research with Pete Campbell in the 1970s.

He was interested in researching the psychology of religion and creating workshop formats for integrating psychological studies into programs for pastoral care.

They co-authored several books and offered workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Ireland and the Czech Republic.

He and his colleague lived in Greeley Hill for a number of years before settling in Sonora eight years ago.

Mr. McMahon was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his companion and colleague of 60 years, Pete Campbell, of Sonora; his sisters, Sally Ann Quaglino, of Morro Bay, and Judith Shimer, of Sonora.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 127 W. Jackson St., Sonora. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.

David A. Harris

Dec. 6, 1937 - Nov. 20, 2013

Mokelumne Hill resident David A. Harris died Nov. 20 at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. He was 75.

Mr. Harris was born in Tulsa, Okla., the son of Lloyd and Pauline (Thompson) Harris.

He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master of science degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas.

He worked as an aerospace engineer for McDonnell Douglas for 30 years and retired in 1992.

He lived in Murphys for several years before settling in Mokelumne Hill in 2011.

Mr. Harris enjoyed gunsmithing and aviation.

Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Steven Harris.

He is survived by his niece, Laura Harris, of Virginia; his nephew, William Harris, of Virginia.

A celebration of life is planned for 1 p.m. today at 11421 Worden Road, Mokelumne Hill.

HUTCHINSON - Former Columbia resident Howard E. Hutchinson, 94, of Lancaster, died Monday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

SALVAREZZA - Mary Salvarezza, 85, of Sonora, died Friday at her home. A vigil is planned for 7 p.m. today at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 127 W. Jackson St., Sonora. Burial will be at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

WOODWARD - Cheryl Woodward, 49, of Copperopolis, died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

WOOLDRIDGE - Dale Wooldridge, 72, of Sonora, died Saturday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
