John Clarence Hays

Aug. 14, 1950 - Oct. 27, 2013

Longtime Tuolumne County resident John Clarence Hays died Oct. 27 at the Palo Alto VA Hospital after a battle with leukemia. He was 63.

Mr. Hays attended Jamestown Elementary School, then Sonora Union High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1967 and served overseas in Germany during his time in the military.

Mr. Hays was preceded in death by his father, Daniel W. Hays, in 1983; and his mother Anne L. Hays, in 2005.

He is survived by his sisters, Sherry L. Johnson, of Sonora, and Mary K. Mays, of Loma Rica, Yuba County; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy D. and Desiree Hays, of Colorado; and his grandchildren, Daniel, Nicole, Nathan, Mia, and Jackson Hays, all of Colorado.

Inurnment will be held in the Hays Cemetery in Wilkinson, Ind., in the spring. He will be buried with his parents in the family cemetery on the Hays family farm.

At his request, no services will be held.

San Jose Funeral Service in San Jose is handling arrangements.

Donald Kay 'D.K.' Lawson

Sept. 4, 1937 - Oct. 28, 2013

Mokelumne Hill resident Donald Kay "D.K." Lawson died Oct. 28 at his home. He was 76.

Mr. Lawson was born in Laura, Okla., the son of Mary Opal (Koontz) and Harry Donald Lawson.

He graduated from Stockton High School and worked for Caltrans in Calaveras County for 25 years.

He was a horseman and cared for animals. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Betty Joy Nance and Jerrie Castro.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda "Bebe" Lawson, of Mokelumne Hill; his son, Kevin Lawson and and his significant other, Kate Shearer, of Sonora; stepchildren, Christina O'Connor, of Angels Camp, and Jim Shuler and his wife, Jennifer, of Stanwood, Wash.; sister, Ruth Purviance and her husband, Wayne, of Rogue River, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Hospice of Amador and Calaveras counties, 1500 S. Highway 49, Jackson, CA 95642.

San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

John Gay Sapp

May 16, 1930 - Oct. 20, 2013

Sonora resident John Gay Sapp died Oct. 20 at Sonora Regional Medical Center Long Term Care Unit of cancer. He was 83.

Mr. Sapp was born in Quincy, Ill., and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a mechanic for Boeing aircraft.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leah and Charles Sapp; four brothers, Alonzo Sapp, Charley Sapp, Eugene Sapp and Bill Sapp; and his sister, Marie Perkey.

He is survived by his sister, Nola Heflin, of Sonora.

A private service will be held at Moiuntain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.
