Merrell Egger

Sonora resident Merrell Egger died Oct. 3 at his home. He was 91.

Mr. Egger was born in Cherry Hill, Ark., to Lucinda and Samuel Irvin Egger.

He and his brothers, Aaron and Naaman Egger, moved their sawmill from Highland, Ark., to the Sugar Pine area in 1943. They ran the mill for many years until its closing. After, he continued working in the lumber industry until retiring in 1986.

Mr. Egger enjoyed camping and spending the holidays with his family. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and traveling across the country in his motorhome. He was a member of the Sonora Moose Lodge.

Mr. Egger was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Irvin and Lucinda Egger; his brothers, Aaron and Naaman Egger; and sister, Lavada Ellard.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris Egger, of Sonora; his children and their spouses, Richard and Beverly Egger, of Sonora, Marilyn and David Kiner, of Twain Harte, Kathleen and Richard Imlach, of Sonora, and Robert and Kathleen Egger, of Sonora; sister, Lucille Rushing, of Soulsbyville; grandchildren and their spouses, Tegan Egger, Suki and Larry Fahl, Sarah Schlenz, and Alicia Schlenz, all of Sonora, and Cortney Kiner, of San Luis Obispo.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sonora Moose Lodge, 20921 Longeway Road, Sonora.

Pansey (Beasley) Johnson

July 24, 1935 - Sept. 30, 1935

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Pansey (Beasley) Johnson died Sept. 30 at her Sonora home. She was 78.

Ms. Johnson was born in San Angelo, Texas, and was a licensed vocational nurse in home care for 35 years.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 811 in Marina. Ms. Johnson was also a member of American Legion Post No. 0593 in Prunedale. She enjoyed camping, fishing, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Ms. Johnson was preceded death by her significant other, Richard Olney; and sisters, Gladys Rosier and Ruby Horne.

She is survived by her sons, Matthew Scott Engelke, of Taylor, Texas, Glen Engelke, of Austin, Texas, Jerry Odom, of Salinas, and James Odom, of Marysville; daughters, Madonna Butler, of Sonora, Cynthia Pitti, of Sonora, and Carla Hamilton, of Texas.; siblings, Jerry Beasley and Janey Williams, both of Sonora; 22 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.

Betty Ruth (Cooper) Powell

Angels Camp resident Betty Ruth (Cooper) Powell died Oct. 6 at her home. She was 82.

Mrs. Powell was born in Torrance to Beryl and Viola Cooper. She lived in Calaveras County for more than 50 years. During that time she worked as a waitress, home health aide and as a retail clerk. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her hobbies included sewing, bingo, doll collecting, playing cards and going to yard sales.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by her husband Gary C. Powell Sr., of Angels Camp; her sons, James Park, of Angels Camp, Richard Hemphill, of Desert Hot Springs, Nicholas and Jay Coonrod, of Angels Camp; and her stepson, Gary Powell Jr., of Columbia; her daughters, Sheila Hamilton, of Angels Camp, Karen Towers, of Copperopolis, Janet Airs, of Southern California; and her stepdaughter, Tamara Finley, of Columbia; her sister, Cooper, of Louisville, Ky.; her grandchildren, Sam, Sherry, Jeff, Kristen, Rebecca, Carrie and Katie; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers-in-laws; three sister-in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Altaville Protestant Cemetery, Altaville.
