Doris Borge-Dorffi

May 11, 1937 - Sept. 26, 2013

Sonora resident Doris Borge-Dorffi died Sept. 26 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 76.

Mrs. Dorffi was born in Oakland and graduated from Holy Names High School in 1955.

She attended San Francisco State University and majored in recreation. She graduated in 1959 and went to work for Menlo Park Parks and Recreation Department.

She later moved back to Oakland and worked for the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department.

While raising four sons, she returned to school and earned a master's degree in public administration from California State University, Hayward. In her last year at Hayward, she was selected for a U.S. Presidential Internship program.

Upon her return, she went to work for the U.S. Forest Service in the San Francisco regional office. In 1980, she moved to Redding with her sons and mother and worked as a contracting officer at the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

During fire seasons, she was a member of a fire management team supporting wildland firefighting operations. She served on those teams every summer of her Forest Service career.

In 1992, she transferred to Sonora, where she was a resource manager at the Stanislaus National Forest. She retired in 2007.

In retirement, she enjoyed ceramics and photography. She was a member of an anagama kiln team and was a member of the Aloft Gallery, where she was an exhibiting artist.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Dorffi, of Sonora; sons, Marc Borge, Steven Borge, Paul Borge, and Daniel Borge; daughters-in-law, Shannon Borge and Femke Borge; grandchildren, Chris Borge, Shane Borge, Nick Borge, Leike Borge and Sofia Borge; one great-granddaughter; stepdaughters, Christine Charbonneau, Roxanne O'Moore and Lynn Dorffi; stepgranddaughters, Chelsea O'Moore and Kelly O'Moore.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Sonora Elks Lodge.

Ethel Marie Capps Obernolte

March 21, 1914 - Sept. 23, 2013

Sonora resident Ethel Marie Capps Obernolte died Sept. 23 at Avalon Care Center. She was 99.

Mrs. Obernolte was born in Whittier and was a homemaker for 70 years. She lived in Sonora for nine years.

Her interests included church, school, music, golf, fishing and camping.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Eileen Obernolte, of Ennis, Mont.; her daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and David Sweitzer, of Sonora; her sister, Enid Manning, of Culver City; grandchildren, Theresa and David Bushey, Rena Obernolte, Tanya and Mark Roettgering, and Stephen and Rachel Sweitzer; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchild.

No services to be held.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Lyman Everett Obernolte, in 1991.

Interment will be at Mount View Cemetery in Beaumont, Riverside County.

Herbert Spierling

Feb. 22, 1930 - Sept. 29, 2013

Sonora resident Herbert Spierling died Sept. 29 at his home. He was 83.

Mr. Spierling was born in Illinois and served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Spierling was a member of the Sons in Retirement in Twain Harte and enjoyed fishing and tennis.

He worked as an electrical engineer in electronic radio systems for 40 years and was a HAM radio operator.

Mr. Spierling lived in Sonora for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Natalie "Beckwith" Spierling, of Sonora; his sons, Mark Hunter Spierling, of San Diego and Scott Chares Spierling, of Sunnyvale; his daughter, Lora Gisler, of Cameron, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

No services will be held.
