Virginia (Cowan) Hunt

Sonora native and former resident Virginia (Cowan) Hunt died Sept. 19 in Chico. She was 96.

Mrs. Hunt was born July 5, 1917, in Sonora, the youngest daughter of Clarence and Nellie Jane Cowan.

Her grandfather, Oliver Cowan, came to California in a covered wagon in 1850 and bought property in Sonora.

On her maternal side, the Davies family settled in the Columbia area in the 1860s.

Virginia was the last of the Cowan family raised in the family home on the corner of Cowan and Stewart streets.

She graduated from Sonora High School and attended Fresno State College, now Fresno State University. She worked at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. until she married Buel Hunt, who worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

They moved to Redding, where she raised a stepson and two sons of her own.

Mrs. Hunt later worked for Shasta County as a clerk in the welfare program.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and many other local organizations in Redding.

Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by her husband, Buel Hunt; her siblings, Ethel Fahey and Oliver Cowan; one nephew and one cousin.

She is survived by her children, Lee Hunt and his wife, Susan, of Chico, and Russell Hunt, of Redding; stepson, John Hunt, of Utah; two grandsons, Ryan Hunt and Daniel Hunt, of Chico, and three step-granddaughters; one niece; and two great-nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at later date. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

COMER - Former Columbia resident Alberta "Lucy" Comer, 71, died April 22 at a hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz. A celebration of life potluck will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at 11299 Columbia Village Drive, Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

EDWARDS - Vivien Edwards, 87, of Copperopolis, died Sept. 15 at her home. She is survived by her husband, Royal Edwards; and four daughters. A memorial will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at Lake Tulloch Bible Church, 3566 Spangler Lane, Copperopolis. Eaton Funeral Home in Modesto is handling arrangements.

EGGER - Merrel Egger, 91, of Sonora, died Thursday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral is handling arrangements.
